A disconnect (also called a safety switch, service disconnect, or main disconnect) gives electrical contractors and facility teams a single-throw means of isolating an electrical circuit for maintenance, fault clearing, or lockout/tagout. Every commercial and industrial service requires a means of disconnect at the service entrance, at motor loads above defined horsepower thresholds, and at any equipment that needs to be serviced without de-energizing the entire panel.

The first procurement decision on any disconnect is whether you need overcurrent protection built into the switch or only isolation.
Fusible disconnects accept Class J, Class R, or Class L time-delay fuses depending on amp rating, providing both isolation and overcurrent protection in a single enclosure. Class J is the standard pick for new commercial work because of the smaller footprint and current-limiting performance. Class R is common on retrofit jobs where the existing fuse clips dictate the type. Class L is the choice on larger frame sizes from 601 amp upward.
Non-fusible disconnects provide isolation only and are used downstream of an existing overcurrent device — typically a feeder breaker in a panelboard or switchboard. Non-fusible units are the right call when the upstream breaker already handles short-circuit and overload protection and the local switch only needs to satisfy the NEC working-space and means-of-disconnect requirements.
Heavy-duty (HD) safety switches are the standard on commercial and industrial installations. They are rated for 200,000 AIC with the correct fuse, carry voltage ratings to 600V AC, and use a quick-make / quick-break mechanism that handles the higher fault currents found on three-phase systems. Every disconnect we stock is heavy-duty unless explicitly noted.
General-duty (GD) switches are 240V single-phase only and are not appropriate for the commercial three-phase loads our customers source. If a spec calls for general-duty equipment, the install is almost certainly outside our wheelhouse.
When a disconnect is the first means of disconnect after the utility service drop, it must be service entrance rated. Service entrance rated disconnects ship with a factory-installed neutral assembly bonded to the enclosure and meet UL 869A. Eaton's DH-EM series, Square D's H-frame service entrance models, and Siemens HF service rated variants are stocked across the common amp ratings. If the panel schedule calls for SE-rated, specify it on the quote request — the wrong neutral bond on a service entrance disconnect will fail inspection.
